Tradition of sparkling wine (Sekt)

The Sektkellerei Fitz (Sparkling-Wine-Cellar) is historically one of the most interesting in all of Germany.

It was founded as the "Dürkheim Champagne Factory" in 1837 by Johann Fitz, who after being forced into exile following his outspoken involvement at the "Hambach Festival" in 1832, spent several years in Reims, France before returning to Bad Dürkheim with the first French cellar master on Palatinate soil.

Sektkellerei Fitz is the third-oldest sparkling wine producer in Germany and the oldest in the Pfalz. Its extensive archives include correspondence with the King's house of Bavaria in the 1840s when Fitz Sparkling Hock adorned the King's table.

In 1842 the Royal Bavarian Gold and Silver Medals were awarded to this Bad Dürkheim "Champagne Factory".

The Fitz Sparkilng wine production has continued to the present day to produce sparkling wines of the highest quality and has been designated "A secret tip" by the gourmet press.

Base wines used in the Fitz production are grown exclusively in the Pfalz region and the seven varieties which the cellar boasts today derive from Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes.
